On the face of it - Virtual Reality and Journalism seem like two words that just can’t co-exist. Journalism is about covering real things, and reporting the ‘ truth'. VR is about creating new worlds, or in the case of 360 VR video, gathering a complete spherical video feed of an event in real time. But it’s clear that immersive VR journalism is here to stay. As the technology improves. it will become even more realistic, powerful, and ethically complicated.
Shooting 360 degree video, which can be viewed on Youtube, Facebook, or with a VR headset, was once reserved for professionals with a professional budget. Over the last year, we’ve begun seeing a number of manufacturers releasing 360 degree cameras that promise high quality immersive video at a price point that consumers can actually afford.
